People who live with constant road noise have a higher risk of developing depression compared to those who live in areas where there is little or no car noise, according to a new study.

The research, published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, concludes that if road noise to which people are subjected is constant and loud and persists for a long time, increases the risk of developing depression by 25 percent.

The cause is most certainly in the stress caused by traffic noise as well as any other loud and persistent ambient noise. To protect yourself from it and prevent depression, experts advise going for a walk often, socialize, wear earplugs, and sleep in the room in the house farthest from the road if noise is causing insomnia.

This also suggests that, if it is detected that depression is caused by street noise, the interventions targeting environmental factors they can help the patient if combined with medications and psychotherapy.

Remember that, in addition to depressive symptoms, such as sadness and feeling like a failure, the damaging effects of traffic noise also include stress and heart disease.

Now it is in the hands of the city councils work towards better urban planning so that traffic noise does not continue to pose a risk to develop depression and other diseases that put the lives of citizens in danger.
