Is Summer the Best Season for Mental Health?

Lobes of the brain

Summer is associated with cheerful moods, but there are people for whom hot weather and sunny days do the opposite. It is estimated that around 15 percent of humans are hypersensitive. If you are easily overwhelmed by bright lights and noises, easily scared, influenced by other people's moods, or having a great effect on you, you most likely belong to this group, which is genetically different from the rest, according to research.

Some hypersensitive people feel their mental health deteriorate when it rains, while others experience this decline in the heat, so the belief that warm weather is always better is not true.

Heat can also make people more aggressive, as a 2013 study published in the journal Science showed. Researchers witnessed a 4 percent increase in interpersonal violence and a 14 percent increase in intergroup conflict as temperatures soared.

Another data that supports the worsening of the mood in some people as a direct consequence of the summer is the peak of suicides. The heat is supposed to bring joy, but during the spring and early summer there are strong waves of suicides, especially among men and the elderly.

It should be noted that there are different degrees of hypersensitivity. Not all enemies of summer respond equally poorly to hot, humid weather. Despite feeling down, most thrive. The keys are to surround yourself with positive people, spend a few hours a day outdoors and never let the heat prevent you from doing the things that make you enjoy, since that will put you at risk of developing depression.
