Peanuts: nutritious food

Peanut

The peanuts have a bad reputation for gaining weight due to the large amount of fat they include, however this is just a myth because not only peanuts benefits for health are many, but also help weight control thanks to the fiber they contain -which prevents extra calories from being absorbed-.

In addition to this, they also contribute to satisfy hunger for longer (thus avoiding eating other types of foods) and help reduce bad cholesterol by raising good cholesterol, since 80% of the fats in peanuts are unsaturated - this in turn helps control cardiovascular diseases.

In addition to the beneficial fats, peanuts have other important nutritional properties:

  • Proteins.- Each 30 grams of peanuts provides 7 grams of protein; in fact, peanuts contain the most protein among oilseeds.
  • Fiber.- The dietary fiber in peanuts helps control blood glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, ideal for diabetics.
  • Vitamin E.- This vitamin is a natural antioxidant that helps to better metabolize oxygen in the blood.
  • Minerals.- This food mainly provides potassium (regulates blood pressure), phosphorus (essential for the proper functioning of the mind) and magnesium (essential for muscle relaxation and nerve transmission).
  • Folic acid.- Folic acid is necessary for the formation of red blood cells and the production of DNA.
  • Phytosterols and arginine.- The former protect against heart disease, while arginine benefits the arteries.

Finally, it should be mentioned that if you are diet, you have to opt for the natural peanuts since commercials contain a lot of sodium (which causes fluid retention).
