Four things to do when you have a urinary tract infection (UI)

Urinary tract

The first thing to do when experiencing UTI symptoms is to visit your doctor for antibiotics. However, there are other things that can (and should) be done to move steadily toward recovery. These are four home remedies that will help you a lot with your UI.

Drinking water is essentialas it helps to eliminate the bacteria that are causing the infection. The ideal amount depends on the weight of each person. The corpulent ones (more than 75 kilos) would do well to be between 2,5 and 3 liters per day, while the rest can do well with between 2 and 2,5 liters. This rule does not apply to people with kidney disease. If this is your case, consult your doctor about the safest amount of liquids for your case.

Strengthens the presence of foods rich in vitamin C in your diet. This nutrient - also known as ascorbic acid - is a urinary acidifier, which inhibits the growth of bacteria. Food is more preventive, while taking vitamin C supplements will be more effective if you already have a urinary infection.

Put away irritating foods like caffeine, alcohol, and carbonated beverages, as they can further irritate the bladder, extending healing time. Focus on healthy foods. And make sure you get enough fiber, which is good for digestive health.

Empty your bladder as many times as necessary. Don't resist, because every time you urinate (even a small amount) you are ridding your body of some of the bacteria that cause the infection.
