Allergies - Causes and Complications

Allergy

We are already in the middle of spring, the season most feared by allergy sufferers. However, it should be noted that there are several types of allergies. Some are seasonal, while others occur throughout the year.

The most common causes are pollen, dust mites, pet dander and hair, cockroaches, mold spores, insect bites, medications (penicillin, aspirin ...), latex, cleaning products and metals (especially nickel, cobalt, chromium and zinc).

Foods such as eggs, milk, wheat, soybeans, and certain fish and shellfish are also among the main allergens.

When the immune system detects an allergen, substances such as histamine are released. Too much can irritate the skin, throat, nose, and lungs, which can lead to complications such as asthma, eczema, ear and lung infections, sinusitis, nasal polyps, and migraines.

When you have severe allergies, the situation is different. Life-threatening complications (drop in blood pressure, severe wheezing, fast and weak pulse ...) can arise due to a reaction called anaphylaxis, mainly associated with food, penicillin, and insect venom.

With the purpose of prevent allergic reactions, or at least limit them, experts recommend a series of measures that include avoiding triggers (you can keep a journal to find out what they are), wearing an identification bracelet (to let others know that you have an allergy if you cannot communicate during a severe reaction) and always have epinephrine within reach (only those with severe allergies).
